Styling Tips for Thinning Hair

In the previous installation of this series, we learnt about the various hairstyles that you could rock if you find yourself thinning up top. Today, we’ll be dishing out some essential styling tips that you can follow to get the best out of what you already have.

1. Cut your hair often!

As counter-intuitive as it sounds, keeping the sides and back short and tight will help maintain the shape of your haircut as well as reduce the contrast with your already thinning top. An optimum time frame that you could follow would be to cut your sides every 2-3 weeks whilst keeping your top trimmed every 6 weeks.

2. Wash with care

While many believe that washing your hair too often can actually worsen thinning hair, proper washing actually removes the grime and grease that causes hair to lie flat and look sparse. Be sure to use lukewarm water instead of hot water, as the high temperatures can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause dryness and irritation down the road.

3. Using the right styling products

There are various products out there that you can use to give your hair extra fluff and volume. Avoid heavier, gel-like styling products and go for lighter products like moulding pastes or texture creams that will help add volume to limp and fine hair. Here are some products we recommend for those with fine hair:

Boardwalk Style Lock Spray, $30

Slick Gorilla Hair Styling Powder, $32

Boardwalk Matte Pomade, $36

4. Combs down, fellas!

Constant combing can cause your hair to look limp and flat. Use nature’s best hair tools aka your fingers to create more volume and texture in your hair!

5. Go easy on the blow dryer

A blow dryer can be your best companion in helping you achieve a voluminous look as the heat from the hair dryer helps open the cuticles in the shaft. However, it is important to take note that for thinning hair, you should use a hair dryer with adjustable heat and stick to the medium heat setting as applying too much heat to your hair will dry out the hair and cause it to be brittle. If a blow dryer isn’t your thing, allowing your hair to air dry with a couple spritzes of sea salt spray could also give your hair the extra volume it needs!

Blind Barber Sea Salt Spray, $33
